Either way, the competition concluded its first set of Hollywood auditions not with a high note, but with a thud. Literally, as Symone Black was talking to the judges about why she selected "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" when she took a couple uneven steps and then... WHAM! She fell off the stage and crashed to the floor.

Christiansburg Parks and Rec opens registration for volleyball and ...

The Christiansburg Department of Parks and Recreation is currently offering Coed- Church League Volleyball, Co-ed Open Volleyball, and Men?s Open Volleyball. Registration ends February 24.

Fees are $125.00 per team. Ages for Church League are 14 and over and the other two are 16 and over.

Registration for Men?s Open Softball, Women?s Open Softball, Co-ed Open Softball ends March 16.

Fees are $300.00 per team. Ages 18 and over are eligible.

History of Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed martial arts, also known as ultimate fighting, is a combat sport that allows full contact fighting techniques that involve multiple martial arts. The martial arts include hand to hand punching and kicking, this term is known as striking. Striking consists of martial arts such as boxing, kick boxing, and muay thai. Mixed martial arts also include a variety of ground fighting moves, also known as grappling moves, that include martial arts such as Brazilian jiu jitsu, judo, sambo, and wrestling.

History and Evolution of the Sport

The sport of mixed martial arts dates back to the ancient Greece era. It has been reported that an ancient Olympic combat sport called Pankration was a form of mixed martial arts. This Olympic sport was combination martial arts that involved stand up striking and ground fighting.

The word pankration is described as the two Greek words, pan and kratos, which mean "all powers." This describes Pankration because of all the martial arts that are involved in the competition. All power forms of striking, wrestling, and grappling techniques are involved with Panration. The sport only had two rules which included no biting or eye gouging. The matches had no time limit and could only be end by knockout or submission. It has been reported that the average match would last for several hours.

Modern Day Mixed Martial Arts

Pankration began to decline and eventually was abolished from Greece Olympic competition. Other forms of martial arts began to evolve. Following the Greece era, in the late 1800's, wrestlers began to organized tournaments in Europe to determine what the best fighting styles were. In the early 1900's mixed martial arts competitions began forming all throughout Europe, Japan, and parts of Asia. Mixed martial arts began creating more rules that included time limits and point systems. By the mid 1900's more mixed martial arts competitions began to unfold throughout the world. Popular competitions, disciplines, and tournaments were introduced by martial artist Bruce Lee and the Gracie family. Lee introduced a popular hybrid martial art called Jeet Kune Doon. The Gracie family formed the martial art Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, a ground fighting grappling.

Early 1990's

In the early 1990's North America began to get involved with the sport of mixed martial arts. The Ultimate Fighting Championship was formed in 1993 by the company Semaphore Entertainment Group. The UFC hosted no holds barred mixed martial arts tournaments. Most of the tournaments involved fighters with various martial arts backgrounds. The company SEG promoted the UFC in a bad form. SEG wanted to market the UFC as a blood sport and not a martial art. The negative marketing led to a lot of bad publicity for MMA and the UFC in the United States. The UFC continued to grow more popular in the USA, but eventually was banned from pay per view in 1997. Pride Fighting Championship also formed in the early 1990's. Pride was founded in Japan and hosted mixed martial arts tournaments in large arenas.

Late 1990's

In the late 1990's the UFC, to become more mainstream, started to promote the sport in a more positive way. The UFC created safer rules, hired judges for matches, incorporated time limits, weight classes, and rounds. The changes helped the UFC get back on pay per view and become sanctioned by several organizations in North America. Pride Fighting Championships continued to grow in popularity in Japan and throughout the world.

2000's and Present

SEG, due to financial problems, sold the UFC to Zuffa. Zuffa was led by Dana White and the Fertitta brothers. When Zuffa purchased the UFC, they invested millions of dollars into the company. Zuffa organized great matches for the UFC and held matches in Canada, Japan, Brazil, Europe, and North America. Zuffa marketed the UFC as martial art competition. Eventually the UFC continued to gain popularity worldwide and bought out its rival MMA company Pride Fighting Championships. The UFC is currently considered the most popular MMA company in the world.

GRAHAM, Wash. (AP) ? Days after a judge ruled against him in a child custody hearing, a father and his two young sons were killed Sunday when police said he appeared to intentionally blow up a house with all three inside ? a tragic ending to a bizarre case that began months ago when the man's wife went mysteriously missing in Utah.

A Child Protective Services worker brought the two boys to Josh Powell's home for what was to be a supervised visit, and Powell let his sons inside ? but then blocked the social worker from entering, Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz told The Associated Press.

The social worker called her supervisors to report that she could smell gas, and moments later the home exploded. What's left of the house was still smoking Sunday afternoon, and fire crews were mopping up the scene.

Sgt. Ed Troyer, Pierce County sheriff's spokesman, said emails Powell sent authorities seemed to confirm the Powell planned the deadly blast. Troyer didn't elaborate on the contents of the emails.

Jeffrey Bassett, who represented Powell in the custody case, said he received a three-word email from his client just minutes before Powell and the two boys died. It said, "I'm sorry, goodbye."

The email arrived at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, about 10 minutes before the explosion, but he didn't see it until two hours later, when others told him Josh and the boys had been killed. He said he knew Josh was upset after being ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation recently, but he didn't see this coming.

Powell was under investigation in the disappearance of his 28-year-old wife Susan from their West Valley City, Utah, home in December 2009. He claimed he had taken the boys on a midnight excursion in freezing temperatures when she vanished.

The children, 5 and 7, had been living with Susan Powell's parents since Josh Powell's father Steven was arrested on child porn and voyeurism charges last fall. On Wednesday, a judge had denied an attempt by Josh Powell to regain custody, saying she wouldn't consider returning the two boys to their father until he underwent a psycho-sexual evaluation.

"It's the most horrifying thing you can imagine happening," said lawyer Steve Downing, who represented Susan Powell's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, in the custody fight. "The Coxes are absolutely devastated. They were always very fearful of him doing something like this, and he did it."

Bassett said he represented Powell free of charge because "every parent deserves the right to an attorney." Powell called or emailed him at least once a day, and often more than that, and in their conversations "he never once admitted doing anything regarding Susan. In fact, he denied it."

Sgt. Mike Powell of the West Valley City Police Department in Utah, which is handling the investigation into Susan Powell's disappearance, said it was too soon to say how Josh Powell's death may impact their probe.

"Quite frankly, this has obviously quickly unfolded up in Washington and we're obviously just working through the details ourselves here," Powell said Sunday.

"We are in contact with authorities," Powell added. "It's obviously an ongoing situation in Washington at this point."

Kirk Graves, 39, of West Jordan, Utah, Josh Powell's brother-in-law, said he and his wife, Jennifer, were stunned by the news. (Jennifer Powell Graves is Josh Powell's sister.)

"It's a shock. A total complete shock," he said. "We never contemplated the idea he would do something like this. You just don't expect it from a father."

Kirk Graves said he and his wife think Josh Powell deliberately set off the explosion to kill him and his sons.

"His world was falling apart around him and he was going to lose his boys and get arrested for Susan's disappearance," he said. "He's a narcissist and he has no love for anyone but himself.
