This chart shows the weekly number of initial and continued unemployment claims over the past decade three years. Both figures have declined steadily since peaking in 2009, though initial claims had a slight bump in recent months. Initial claims went flat this week, while continued claims dropped.

Today?s jobless claims?report indicated that initial unemployment claims went flat and continued unemployment claims declined slightly while seasonally adjusted initial claims remained below the closely watched 400K level.

Seasonally adjusted ?initial? went flat at 374,000 claims while seasonally adjusted ?continued? claims declined by 5,000 resulting in an ?insured? unemployment rate of 2.6%.

Since the middle of 2008 though, two federal government sponsored ?extended? unemployment benefit programs (the ?extended benefits? and ?EUC 2008? from recent legislation) have been picking up claimants that have fallen off of the traditional unemployment benefits rolls.

Currently there are some 2.27 million people receiving federal ?extended? unemployment benefits.

Taken together with the latest 3.16 million people that are currently counted as receiving traditional continued unemployment benefits, there are 5.44 million people on state and federal unemployment rolls.

In accordance with Rule 2.10 of the City Code on Takeovers and Mergers (the "Takeover Code"), the Company announces that, as at close of business on 29 August 2012, the issued share capital of the Company comprised 405,812,703 ordinary shares of 1 pence each with voting rights. The Company currently holds no ordinary shares or deferred shares in treasury. Therefore, the total number of voting rights in the Company is 405,812,703.

As at 29 August 2012, convertible loan notes in the aggregate principal amount of ?18.75 million were outstanding. These convertible loan notes are convertible into ordinary shares of 1 pence each on the terms of a Convertible Loan Note Instrument dated 27 April 2012, the key terms of which were set out in the Shareholder Circular published by the Company on 4 April 2012.

As at 29 August 2012, the Company had issued 1,128,743 warrants to subscribe for ordinary shares at a subscription price of 309 pence per ordinary share and 437,480 warrants to subscribe for ordinary shares, the key terms of which were set out in the Shareholder Circular published by the Company on 4 April 2012.

Here's something you still don't see every day: a KIRF that's unveiled before the device it's supposed to copy. Although the 2012 iPhone may not show for weeks, the Android-based Goophone I5 is already doing a remarkable job of aping Apple's rumored style, including that two-tone look that we've all seen before. Just don't get notions that it's the bargain of the century. Where most rumors point to a bigger screen for the real thing, the I5 is making do with a 3.5-inch screen similar to that for Goophone's iPhone 4S imitator, the Y5. Performance isn't likely to jolt the engineers in Cupertino out of their seats, either. Mum's the word on whether or not the I5 will beat its inspiration to the store shelf, but we'd wager that it will cost a lot less.

Clinton set to take U.S. Asia push to South Pacific

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will venture to the South Pacific this week as she takes Washington's bid to reassert itself against China to a remote corner of the world where the power rivalry is increasingly apparent.

Clinton will lead a U.S. government team to the Cook Islands for the August 31 meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum, a group of 16 independent and self-governing territories scattered across a huge expanse of ocean east of New Zealand, the State Department said on Tuesday.

Clinton's trip will also include stops in Indonesia, Brunei, East Timor and China, all of which are expected to include discussions on the South China Sea, where competing territorial claims by Beijing and its neighbors have created Asia's biggest potential military flashpoint.

"We don't want to see the disputes in the South China Sea or anywhere else settled by intimidation, by force. We want to see them settled at the negotiating table," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told a news briefing.

"And we have also consistently been calling for increasing transparency in the Chinese military posture."

Beijing has accused Washington of sending the wrong signals on the South China Sea, part of its push back against the Obama administration's "pivot" to Asia that many Chinese analysts see as a campaign to contain rising Chinese power and influence in the region.

NURTURING RELATIONSHIPS

In the South Pacific, Clinton will have a chance to personally emphasize the benefits of U.S. friendship to a group of tiny nations that regularly line up with Washington on international issues but which are also now being heavily courted by Beijing.

The United States hopes to boost the forum as a regional alliance to combat shared threats such as climate change, encourage economic development and protect marine stocks in the face of overfishing.

China has nevertheless been scaling up its economic assistance to Pacific Island states, pledging a total of more than $600 million since 2005, according to figures compiled by Australia's Lowy Institute.

Clinton's hosts in the Cook Islands -- a self-governing territory associated with New Zealand -- will be able to show off a new, Chinese-financed courthouse and police headquarters while other island states have received grants for official cars, airport repairs, hospital construction and language courses.

While much of China's historic engagement with the region has been to counter diplomatic advances by its rival, Taiwan, it has now moved beyond that, said Denny Roy, a senior fellow at the East West Center in Hawaii.

"It is now probably more accurate to see the growth of Chinese influence in the South Pacific as not necessarily part of a scripted and controlled plan by the Chinese government," Roy said.

"It has become broader, part of China's economic and government interests going abroad and seeking the room that comes with being an emerging power."

Clinton's trip will take her out of the United States as Democrats gather next week for a convention to nominate President Barack Obama for a second term. Clinton, who as America's top diplomat was not expected to attend, has said she plans to step down at the end of Obama's current term.

But she will stand in for Obama himself at a meeting of leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Vladivostok on September 8-9, the State Department said.

A hearing that will give Apple the stage to argue if Samsung should be banned from selling some of its Android smartphones in the U.S. has been pushed back until December.

Judge Lucy Koh, who has been presiding over the Apple vs. Samsung patent infringement case, has moved the hearing from Sept. 20 to Dec. 6.

The news comes less than a week after a jury awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages for patent infringements, with a looming possibility that several Samsung devices might be banned from the U.S.

Another hearing, which will address Samsung's efforts to lift the sales ban on its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet, is still set for Sept. 20.

Although Samsung was found guilty of infringement related to 28 devices, many of which are no longer sold in the U.S., Apple said in a filing that it "has tailored this list to address a portion of the immediate, ongoing, irreparable harm that Apple is suffering."

The tailored list names eight devices: the Galaxy S 4G, AT&T Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail.

Samsung has since issued a statement saying that the ruling will "lead to fewer choices, less innovation and potentially higher prices" and will be "a loss for the American consumer."

Pa. Senate candidate compares abortion decisions

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? The Republican candidate for Senate in Pennsylvania on Monday compared the decision to abort an unwanted pregnancy resulting from premarital sex to one conceived through rape as he defended his opposition to abortion in all cases.

Tom Smith, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Bob Casey, made the remark after being asked how he would argue to keep the baby if a daughter or granddaughter were to become pregnant as a result of rape. Smith said that his daughter went through "something similar" to rape: "Having a baby out of wedlock."

In the Senate race in Missouri, Republican candidate Todd Akin drew condemnation from Democrats and many Republicans when he referred to "legitimate rape" in discussing his stance against abortion in all cases. The Missouri congressman later apologized for saying that women have a natural biological defense against becoming pregnant because of rape.

Speaking to reporters after an appearance at the Pennsylvania Press Club, Smith said he did not condone rape but was categorically opposed to abortion under any circumstances, including rape or incest.

"I lived something similar to that with my own family, and she chose the life, and I commend her for that," Smith said, adding that his daughter was not raped. "She knew my views, but fortunately for me ... she chose the way I thought."

After comparing the decisions raised by rape and out-of-wedlock pregnancy, Smith was asked a follow-up question about whether the two were similar. He replied: "No, no, no, but, well, put yourself in a father's position. Yes, I mean, it is similar, this isn't, but I'm back to the original, I'm pro-life ? period."

Asked to clarify, he said: "I'm not going to argue about the method of conception. It's a life, and I'm pro-life . It's that simple."

Holliday's HR helps Cardinals?top Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Matt Holliday hit a tiebreaking home run and Kyle Lohse won his eighth consecutive decision, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night.

Holliday led off the sixth inning with his 24th homer, a drive to right field off A.J. Burnett that put St. Louis ahead for good at 3-2.

Lohse (13-2) pitched five innings before being lifted following a 34-minute rain delay in the top of the sixth. He allowed two runs and five hits while striking out three and walking none.

Lohse has not lost in 13 starts dating to June 15 and raised his career record against Pittsburgh to 9-2.

Burnett (15-5) gave up four runs, two earned, and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings with three strikeouts and one walk. He lost at home for just second time this season in 10 decisions and 13 starts.

Holliday, Allen Craig and Skip Schumaker all had two hits for the Cardinals as did Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez and Clint Barmes for Pittsburgh.

St. Louis, which has won six of seven, entered play with a 1 1-2 game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers for the second NL wild-card berth. Pittsburgh fell three games behind the Cardinals with its sixth loss in seven games.

The Cardinals added a run in the sixth after Holliday's home run as Yadier Molina hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.

The Pirates drew within a run in the seventh inning on Barmes' RBI double. They put runners on first and second in the eighth but closer Jason Motte came in and escaped the jam by getting Josh Harrison to hit into an inning-ending force play.

Motte retired the side in the ninth for his 31st save in 36 opportunities.

St. Louis had tied the score at 2-2 in the fifth inning as Shumaker hit a run-scoring double and came home on a single by Lohse.

The Pirates scored the game's first two runs in the fourth on RBI singles by McCutchen and Alvarez after neither team produced a hit in the first 3 1-2 innings. Alvarez has 17 RBIs against the Cardinals this season.

NOTES: Pittsburgh 2B Neil Walker was a late scratch because of lower back stiffness. Harrison, who was scheduled to start at shortstop, moved to second base and Barmes was inserted into the lineup. . St. Louis 3B David Freese did not start for a third straight game because of a bruised right wrist but he pinch-hit and struck out in the eighth inning. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said last year's World Series MVP will likely return to the lineup Tuesday night. INF/OF Matt Carpenter started in Freese's place. . Attendance was just 16,700 for what was arguably the biggest game since PNC Park opened in 2001. Pittsburgh is in contention this late in the season for the first time since 1997and has not had a winning season since 1992. . The deal sends Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Nick Punto to the Dodgers in exchange for first baseman James Loney, pitching prospects Allen Webster and Rubby De La Rosa, infielder Ivan DeJesus Jr. and first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands.

According to a baseball source, the Dodgers would absorb the vast majority of salary obligations owed to the four Red Sox players, a figure estimated at $275 million.
