Snow, rain soak eastern U.S. in post-Christmas storms

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Reuters) - The severe winter weather that hit parts of the central and southern United States on Christmas Day moved eastward on Wednesday, causing flight delays and dangerous road conditions in the Northeast and Ohio Valley.

Flights headed for New York, Philadelphia and Newark, New Jersey, were experiencing delays of more than an hour due to the inclement weather, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Nearly 900 U.S. flights had been canceled on Wednesday, according to FlightAware.com.

The National Weather Service issued blizzard and winter storm warnings in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, as well as much of the Northeast, and warned that the wintry weather would make for "treacherous" driving conditions for holiday travelers.

More than six inches of snow might fall in those regions, while the area from western New York up into central Maine could get from 12 to 18 inches, the NWS said.

As of Wednesday morning, Bloomington, Indiana, already had nearly a foot of snow and Indianapolis had about seven inches, according to AccuWeather.com.

Severe thunderstorms and widespread rain were expected from southeast Virginia to Florida, with the eastern counties in North Carolina and South Carolina under tornado watches or warnings, the NWS said.

The wet and snowy conditions follow a major winter storm system that swept through the southern United States on Tuesday, spawning tornadoes in several states and causing the deaths of at least two people in weather-related road accidents.

Twisters struck in Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana, flattening houses and causing injuries, according to the weather service.

Declaring a state of emergency, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant deployed resources to the multiple counties in that state that reported damaged homes and businesses, power outages and flooding.

Tuesday's storms also contributed to a 21-vehicle pile-up that shut Interstate 40 in downtown Oklahoma City and caused power outages for tens of thousands of residents.

A Texas man died after an accident involving a toppled tree in the road, and there was another weather-related fatality on I-44 in Oklahoma, according to local authorities.

In the U.S. southeast, nearly 200,000 homes and businesses remained without electricity on Wednesday following a Christmas Day winter storm packing snow, high winds and tornadoes.

The storm dumped record snowfalls in North Texas and Arkansas.

About 1,000 people spent the night on cots at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport after some 400 flights were canceled there on Tuesday due to weather, said Cynthia Vega, media relations manager at the airport.

On Wednesday morning, about 50 more flights were canceled, she said.

"We're hoping to get passengers back on track," Vega said. "It's probably going to be a little hectic at the airport."

Love it or Leave it: BLUETOOTH trademarks - Erik M Pelton ...

It seems like just about every new laptop, phone, portable music player, car and other hi tech item received this holiday season came equipped with ?Bluetooth? technology. Did you know that BLUETOOTH? is a registered trademark? And so is the Bluetooth symbol or logo that you see on many computer devices. Are the name and logos good ones??

Bluetooth is actually an industry standard. ?As a result it really has no direct competition. But it is a coined arbitrary name ? the words do not describe what the service is or any of its features. The industry standard is managed by a consortium of companies. Many other electronic standards are similarly managed. Those who want to use the technology and name must license the patents and trademarks from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group.

File:BluetoothLogo.svg

According to a Wikipedia entry, ?The word ?Bluetooth? is an?anglicised?version of the Scandinavian?Bl?tand/Bl?tann, the?epithet?of the tenth-century king?Harald I of Denmark?and parts of?Norway?who united dissonant Danish tribes into a single kingdom. The idea of this name was proposed by?Jim Kardach?who developed a system that would allow mobile phones to communicate with computers (at the time he was reading?Frans Gunnar Bengtsson?s historical novel? The Long Ships?about Vikings and king?Harald Bluetooth).[4]?The implication is that Bluetooth does the same with communications protocols, uniting them into one universal standard.[5][6][7]?

Having an arbitrary creative name makes for a strong and distinctive trademark. And having an interesting backstory, like this one for Bluetooth, make the name even more special. ?The name has a meaning that relates in some way to the purpose of the products, but only to those who know the story.

The logo apparently comes from a ?bind rune? combining letters from an old runic alphabet.

I think the name and logo are terrific. The logo is great because it looks both high tech and old fashioned at the same time, it is blue, which is suggestive of the name, and it features a ?B? shape. The name is great because it is unique, it is creative, it is protected and registered (see below), and it is memorable. The logo can appear by itself on a small mobile display and immediately convey meaning to users.

Of course, it is a lot easier to use a made up arbitrary term when you have no real competition. Users will have to use your brand whether they like it not, whether the brand is catchy or not. But regardless, Bluetooth got it right.

Here are two of the Bluetooth USPTO trademark registrations:

Easy Motivating Health And Fitness Tips Towards A Fit Body ...

December 23, 2012 ‐ Posted by Fitness Tips ‐ Under: Fitness Tips

Motivation is a key factor in determining the success of any fitness training regimen. Set concrete goals for yourself, and find ways to keep your enthusiasm high. An important goal worth noting, is to make sure your exercise is fun. Avoid making exercise a chore; instead, view it as a reward. Exercising doesn?t have to feel like an obligation. It?s not impossible to enjoy working out. This article has some tips that will help you make your exercise plan entertaining.

Turn on your favorite music while you are exercising. The beat of the music will cause your body to start moving automatically. This is a natural response that everyone shares. Turn your workout into something fun and exciting with music. In fact, you may get so caught up in the sound of the music that you don?t even realize how tired you are and end up having a longer, more enjoyable workout. Listening to music is a great tool to utilize when you want to make your exercise last longer, because music will make you do more without even realizing it.

TIP! Fear is what stops you? courages is what keeps you going. -Unknown

Get your friends together to help you work out. Your workouts will go much quicker if you have people to talk to. It allows you to focus on the pleasant company you are with rather than on your body. If your life is busy, making your exercise routine a social activity can help you reconnect with friends. Exercising with your friends can help make the experience far more fun and exciting.

There are many fitness video games on the market today. Playing these video games is a great way to get a workout without even realizing it. Grab the kids for extra fun and competition. There are several video games that are great for exercise. When you focus on making exercise entertaining, you?ll be able to work out longer and harder without losing interest.

Shopping for workout gear is a great way to get excited about your fitness routine. Choose clothes that you know you will feel good about wearing. Fitness gear can be very fashionable and flattering. Just choose something that you like and enjoy wearing. Dare to be different! Make it like an adventure. You really want to select a variety of workout clothes capable of inspiring you to exercise frequently.

TIP! Do this routine before every shower: 50 jumping jacks, 5 pushups, 20 crunches, 20 mountain climbers, and 30 second plank. I like the idea of doing it before every shower, then it is easier to become part of a routine.

Doing the same routine day in and day out gets boring. When you include different activities in your exercise regime, you are more likely to stick to it. If your workouts aren?t enjoyable, you?re unlikely to stick with them. In order to keep yourself motivated, you may want to think about switching your exercise routine from time to time. Keeping your workout fun and interesting is essential to a successful, long-term fitness plan. Taking a short break may make it hard to start up again.

A reward is a great way to keep yourself motivated to reach your fitness goals. Try and reward yourself with something special like a massage or a nice dinner to keep you on track with your workout plan. It needn?t be anything over the top- simply a little something to keep you going. Giving yourself reminders of how well you are doing will give you the motivation you require.

For anyone who?s attended a conference on online media or advertising, or read any of the industry trades over the last six months, the phrase "native advertising" is all but inescapable. What it means to be a real friend | The Southern Cross

Saint Thomas Aquinas wrote: ?There is nothing on this earth to be prized more than true friendship.? And I deeply echo his words. True friendship is beautiful, sweet and fulfilling.

Friendship, as the anonymous quote has it, ?is when people know all about you but like you anyway?.

Friendship is a relationship between two or more people who care about each other. But such a dry definition doesn?t do the concept of friendship justice.

Consider these examples: A friend is the first person you want to call immediately when you hear good news or bad news. A friend is someone you can spend time with in person or on the phone for hours?and there will always be something to talk about. A friend remembers that you don?t like long queues, or that your favourite sandwich is ham and cheese.

When a true friend accompanies you to the most boring of places it can become fun. A friend is also someone with whom you can spend time without saying anything, yet come back fulfilled. A friend allows you to let you be you. A friend prays for you.

In other words, friendship is wonderful, and much ink has been spilled in citing the virtues of having friends.

That?s not to say friendship is easy, though. It demands time and effort, and it requires that sometimes we put someone other than ourselves first.

But in exchange for that work, a friend can provide an immense amount of support and comfort in good times and in bad. When your spirit is disturbed by circumstances and you share this with your friend, even though the circumstances are still the same, somehow your spirit is renewed.

Friendship, as the anonymous quote has it, ?is when people know all about you but like you anyway?.

But friendship does not always have to go with warm and fuzzy feelings; it can require real frank and open talk, but always for the good of the friend.

Why are friendships sometimes not easy? Because, at times, we put ourselves first, for example when we insist that ?we?ll do things my way?.

We bring ourselves?our insecurities, our jealousies, our expectations, our own ways of doing?into the friendship. And when these expectations are not met or when our insecurity and jealousy get the better of us, things can go pear-shaped.

This is when we say things like ?You?re such a cruel person?, or ?You invited him, but not me?, or ?So I?m always the bad guy?, or ?You just know me when you need something from me?.

Yes, we do disappoint one another, and when we are disappointed we hurt each other, quite easily.

At school or university we never really learn how to handle friendships. It seems to just happen naturally and we figure it out as we go along?not always successfully.

?

But Jesus calls us his friends and all we need to know from being a true friend lies within his way of being friend. He does not dominate us, or treat us like slaves, or label and judge us, or envy or doubt us. He loves us unconditionally and accepts us as we are. He wants to be with us intimately and make us the best we can be.

He lets us be free. When we fall, he is beside us to help us up again.

Christ is in the centre of all our friendships. All our friendships and relationships must be based in him. Our friendships come from him?our relationship with one another comes from our relationship with him.

When Christ is at the centre of our friendships, it is not us who make the friendship work, but him through us. If we think it is us and we depend only on ourselves for the success of the friendship, never acknowledging nor even speaking about Christ and his love for us, then we will reap the negative rewards of such a friendship in very painful ways.

Friendships and relationships do break up, for whatever reason, and sometimes we can redeem the friendship and sometimes we can?t. But because we share our friendships in Christ, we are always connected to our friends, and we can enjoy a deeper friendship with them, beyond separation and even beyond death.

The only necessary thing for us to do is to pray for our friends.

?

I don?t necessarily agree with everything I say.

? Marshall McLuhan

?

I?ve been putting together some thoughts recently on our collective readership.

Not us when we read. Not our delegation here of Unboxed Writers.

And not even the wider community of writers, local and offshore, national and intergalactic, the diaspora-digital, and where it stops, nobody knows. That?s still us. We who read wee bits of each other and say we loved it. That?s just us chickens.

No, I mean the real readership.?The end user.?He who hurls your book across the room.?She who reads fanny fiction and imagines she?s having a literary experience. The reader.

As writers, what do we ask of that reader? Literacy. That?s what we need. We need someone who is literate ? per Merriam-Webster Unabridged:

Characterized or possessed of learning?able to read and write?versed or immersed in literature or creative writing?dealing with literature or belles lettres.

We ask that our customer, our consumer, our windsurfer, come to our creations with a few drachmas in hand. The currency we accept is literacy. The reader must not leave home without it.

But that reader is not expected to be in the business, as we are. We who do the writing. We who build the bridges and the mansions. We who want them to like us, to really, really like us.

The reader, while literate, can expect to be served by us with a greater level of literacy than she or he must attain. This is the unspoken covenant.

If everyone in 16th-century Venice had been Andrea Palladio, then Palladio would be nobody. Instead, that small, exquisite bridge at the foot of Prior Park in Bath, England, means something ? it?s a prized architectural example of Palladian genius, one of only four such bridges left in the world, according to the National Trust.?Prior Park, itself, was designed with the help of the poet Alexander Pope and a then-famous landscape-garden designer called ?Capability? Brown.

Today, we?re the ?Capabilities,? the ones who can bring Palladian order to human nature. We?re the ones who design with words for a living. We?re the experts, the snazzy guys.

So why don?t we use the language correctly for our readers? Why do we have our characters say such things as these?

  • ?I?m going to lay out in the sun?
  • ?The news media is untrustworthy.?
  • ?I may literally eat a horse.?
  • ?I could care less.?
  • ?There are over fourteen of them.?
  • ?That group was comprised of lots of folks.?
  • ?You can read this book for free.?
  • ?None of them are coming with me.?

In your speech and, worse, in your writing, are you using such formulations? If so, do you necessarily agree with what you write? If no, what?s your favorite excuse?

Excuse #1: It?s conversational

At television news networks, anchors and correspondents complain when corrected by the control room that the wrongly worded phrases they?ve just uttered on-air were ?conversational.?

This is always rubbish. It?s completely possible to speak the language correctly and still be conversational. And here?s how to test this yourself:

Say to the largest gathering of people you can find, ?I?m now going to lie out in the sun.? Then report to me how many of those people rise up and accuse you of being non-conversational because you used the correct form of the verb.

Excuse #2: It?s accepted usage nowadays

By whom? I do not accept ?the media is.?

But let?s say it is accepted, by everybody, even that boorish Porter.

So what? Why not be better than mall-speak?

Let?s get very specific with this one: Why do we need to make a plural word singular? What possible good does this do us? We have the singular form, ready and waiting: medium. And that?s my message. Or massage if the famous McLuhan typo strikes me silly as I write this.

Are you genuinely unable to spare enough mental space and linguistic grace to offer your readers one medium and two media? Are you so poor of intellect and miserly of vocabulary that you can?t summon up the simple distinction between one phenomenon and two phenomena? If a painter doesn?t know his amparo blue from his gentian blue, that painter is a fraud, don?t buy a canvas from him. And if you can?t find it in your heart to distinguish one bacterium from two bacteria, why should anyone pay for your work?

Excuse #3: My characters talk that way

Then your characters are as lazy as you are.

If you?re working in genuine dialect or accent (they are not the same, do you know the difference?), then there may be a reason to utilize some substandard English. But if your reader at any point is unsure that substandard speech was put there deliberately ? if she wonders whether you just didn?t know what you were doing ? then you?ve screwed up.

Excuse #4: The reader doesn?t know the difference

Oh, yes, he does. One of the most compelling things about the readership is that it tends to be peopled by folks who are surprisingly good at the tools of our trade. Sometimes I think this is because they don?t write: these lessons in school were harder for them to grasp, thus they retain more vivid memories of them than we do.

Liz Bureman recently wrote a bit of guidance titled Stop Saying ?Literally.??She led with a few lines about Rob Lowe?s character in the NBC show Parks and Recreation, no relation whatever to Prior Park. Lowe?s character misuses ?literally? in the popular way, using it as a general intensifier. He means ?figuratively.? This is a running gag on the show, set up with ridiculous clarity by the way Lowe delivers it. The audience-at-large knows it?s wrong. They?re laughing at him, not with him.

Your readers know you?re wrong. They?re not laughing with you.

Excuse #5: Language is supposed to serve us, not hobble us

Great. So why have your work edited? It?s just language. Lets throw out all the rules every one of them and maybe in fact I won?t even use periods or commas or any other punctuation to divide this drivel I?m writing into sentences I might just keep going with it like this for as long as I damned well please because the language serves me sweet cheeks and whatever I need it to do is more important than some old maids rules and regulations from the 1920s when they still had time to sit around and make up inane grammar laws that now are like OMG just too much trouble you know to fool with and they cramp the development of my personal form of expression

Excuse #6: I don?t know the language well enough

Ah. Thank you. And that?s not an excuse, that?s a reason, a very valid and respectable one as soon as you admit it.?If you?re not sure you can tell correct usage from the Bieber-fed babble of the moment ? and if you?re willing to learn ? then you?re the one kind of badly spoken writer I like.

There are books. There are podcasts. There are courses. There are tutors. There are many ways to get the training you need to handle this essential aspect of being an authentic writer. If you?re sincere about writing, this is a step you can?t skip. I?m using the term ?essential? deliberately, as in indispensable.

We don?t necessarily agree with ourselves

I believe that one of the reasons we?re seeing so much badly written material these days is that honesty is not considered agreeable. So we don?t say, ?You know, you?ve got five gaffes in that first chapter, my friend, you may need to get some more eyes on that thing.? Instead, we say, ?It?s the best thing I?ve ever read.?

Have you noticed how rarely the term ?talent? comes up when we discuss writing? It?s not considered nice to talk about talent, ?Capability.? Same as intelligence. Someone who doesn?t have as much talent or intelligence might be hurt, right? We act as if everybody?s at the same level, although we know they aren?t.

Look, I want you to forget that stuff your mother taught you about ?If you can?t say anything nice?? Chances are your mother wasn?t in the business, either, and it was fine for her to speak as if she were a fad on legs.

We need to honor each other with truthful exchanges of corrective information. It?s possible to be both forthright and supportive, truthful and kind, firm and gentle.

Such collegial friendship exists only among those who are working to be the real things. To build bridges, raise villas, design piazzas that will make people, 500 years later, say our names, Palladio, and admire our ?Capability.? Our work won?t be revered because we used language as if we were skateboarders.

So happy holidays, and you tell me: Why don?t we have more emphasis these days on writing the language well? Have you found yourself over time accepting less rigorous standards ? either in your own writing or others? ? than you?d have agreed to before?

Poll: If you worked for Google, which corporate gift would you pick?

If you worked for Google, which corporate gift would you pick?

Gift-giving is a beautiful thing, but it inevitably sets precedents. Last Christmas, Google's employees were each handed a customized Galaxy Nexus to take home, which means they'll be expecting something just as nice this year. One solution would be the Nexus 4, but Mountain View is far too smart to let its festive joy hinge on LG's supply chain. Instead, it's apparently taking the safer route of letting workers choose for themselves: either the excellent Nexus 7 (it's not clear which capacity, but we'd guess 32GB) or a wonderful new Samsung Chromebook, or a recently Jelly Beaned RAZR M. So go on, tell us, if all the right hypotheticals were in place, which would you pick?

Louisville coach Pitino supports gun control

Count Rick Pitino among basketball coaches supporting gun control.

The Louisville coach was asked Friday during a news conference at the team's practice facility about his reaction to Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim's comments Monday assailing the nation's gun culture following the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. Pitino agreed with Boeheim, and said he couldn't understand why people wouldn't support gun control.

On consecutive days, Boeheim and Winthrop coach Pat Kelsey used postgame news conferences to express sympathy for victims' families and stress the need for reforms to avoid another tragedy.

Pitino followed by adding that society doesn't need guns.

He says, "The fact that every single person does not want it would be a mystery. This is not the beginning of American civilization where we need guns like it's the wild, wild West."

Pitino said he was unaware of Boeheim's comments following the Syracuse coach's milestone 900th career victory Monday night. Told what his colleague said, Pitino said Boeheim was right and similarly expressed empathy for victims' families.

The Louisville coach seemed saddened over the grieving process the town is going through, believing it might never end. He said he still grieves for brother-in-law Billy Minardi, who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center in New York.

Pitino created an annual game in Minardi's honor ? beating his son, Richard, and Florida International on Wednesday night ? but said he thinks about his good friend every day. And he figures the families, friends and neighbors in Newtown will be hurting for a long time as well.

"I don't know how anybody can ever close their eyes in those families," Pitino said. "There can be no good that comes out of that except immediate gun control."

Pitino went more political, believing that members of Congress on both sides have been around too long to effect change. If they were doing what's right for the country, he said, the nation "would demand" gun control.

He had little to say about the National Rifle Association, which held a news conference Friday in Washington saying that schools should have armed officers for protection.

"I don't care about those people. They have their own agenda," he said. "I don't respect people who have their own agendas."

Facebook tests $1 fee for stranger to message your inbox

14 hrs.

A pair of updates to Facebook's messaging feature is sure to ignite controversy over the holidays. While the improved filtering Facebook has?implemented will be welcomed, an experiment allowing strangers to pay $1 to give their message high priority will likely cause serious unrest.

The updates are part of continuing efforts to expand and monetize Facebook messaging, which means change from a just being a?way for friends on the social network to chat to a more universal and easy communication platform. To that end, Facebook has to allow and control for the possibility of strangers contacting users.

In some cases, as Facebook wrote Thursday, this could easily be something a user might want: A message from someone you met on a night out or at a conference, but whose contact details you failed to get, for instance. On the other hand, it could also be a fake account or an ex, whom nobody would want to hear from.

Facebook has updated filtering to have just two major settings: "Moderate" and "Strict." Moderate will allow more messages from friends of friends, groups, and people who might be otherwise related. "Strict"?will strain out all but close contacts.

Messages from people you aren't closely?connected to usually end up in the "Other" folder. But Thursday's update would allow the sender to spend a dollar to have it appear in the regular inbox.

Facebook's?justification is that while that person, say, who's a missed connection from the bar will be happy to spend a buck to say hello, bad actors like bots and spammers won't find such a cost worthwhile?? they'd have to spend thousands to get it to enough people.

Put that way, it sounds reasonable enough?? but the update inarguably allows strangers to spend money for priority access to your inbox. On a basic level, users may find this undesirable, even though they can always delete messages or mark them as spam, as before.

Facebook describes this as an "experiment," and is currently playing with how it works. For instance, only one message per week could be promoted into any user's?Inbox, which would prevent celebrities from being inundated. And brands and pages would be prohibited from using the feature, which prevents its being used just for advertising.

You can read Facebook's announcement of the feature at its blog post?here, and the new?filtering options should be appearing for users soon.

The tax bite of top mutual funds - Fortune Finance: Hedge Funds ...

By Scott Cendrowski

121220041822-tax-nightmare-gallery-horizontalFORTUNE -- It's the time when "Best funds of the year" lists start appearing in newspapers and glossy magazines. You might even be tempted to dump your portfolio's funds and replace them with these best-performers.

Slow down. Not only do you want to avoid chasing the hot fund of the moment, but you might want to see if the tax bill on some of these all-stars is so high that it strips you of much of the return you think you've earned. You're responsible for paying taxes on a fund's gains. But what fund rankings never tell you is what you'd owe Uncle Sam if you held the top performers.

The problem arises in funds with high turnover because all that buying and selling generates short-term capital gains taxed as ordinary income, a rate that climbs as high as 35%. The tax bill is also exacerbated when the same high-turnover fund relies on dividend payments, which are taxed at up to 35% for stocks held for only brief periods. This isn't a problem for investors who own funds in tax-deferred accounts, such as 401(k)s and IRAs. But if you're holding funds in a regular account, you want to pay attention.

MORE: 15 top stock picks from star investors

Some popular PIMCO funds offer a cautionary tale. Bond guru Bill Gross runs PIMCO's StocksPLUS Total Return fund (PSPTX), an index fund that tracks the S&P 500 using derivatives to juice returns. Morningstar ranks the fund as the sixth best performing active U.S. stock fund of the past year (ending Nov. 30). But once you consider the taxes you'd pay owning it, the fund gets dropped from the top ten. Its one-year return falls from 28.75% to 26.41% after taxes.

Still, not bad. Only two percentage points of gains are eaten up.

But look what happens over a slightly longer period. Gross runs another fund, PIMCO's Fundamental IndexPLUS Total Return fund (PIXAX). The fund's 19.9% annualized return over the past three years is reduced to just 7.24% annualized after adjusting for taxes. That's 12 percentage points of return lost to Uncle Sam each year. Big money.

MORE: Private equity for the average Joe? It's coming

When you pay taxes on high quarterly distributions from a fund, you reduce the amount of money you can reinvest. You're hampered from fully compounding your investment, a huge component of returns. That's the case in these PIMCO funds. For comparison, the Vanguard 500 Index Admiral (VFIAX) shares, an S&P 500 index fund, posted a three year annualized return of 11.23%, which only falls to 10.88% after taxes.

Thanks to Morningstar, we have a ranking of top 2012 funds after taxes (year ending Nov. 30). First, the top 10 funds according to pre-tax returns.

chart 1

Now look at the returns after accounting for taxes. PIMCO's StocksPLUS fund (PSPTX)?drops off the list entirely and many funds lose a couple points of return even over the short one-year period. (The tax effect is much larger over a longer holding period like three or five years.)

chart 2

Here's one last ranking. This time, a list of funds that generated the highest tax bill for investors over the past year. We show their total return, and the return lost to taxes. (This assumes you bought the funds last November and held them through the end of this November.)

chart 3

Remember: taxes are one more reason you should think twice before buying high-flying funds.

2611 Case U.S. State Department says India not a party to granting immunity to ISI DGs

Karachi News.Net Wednesday 19th December, 2012

A State Department Spokesperson said: "We have noted that the U.S. Department of State has taken the position in a U.S. Court that the Pakistani ISI be accorded immunity from the civil suit on the Mumbai terrorist attack of November 26, 2008.

For India, it remains of vital importance that justice is done and that those who organized and perpetrated this horrible crime be brought to justice, irrespective of the jurisdiction under which they may reside or be operating. It cannot be that any organization, State or non-State, that sponsors terrorism enjoys immunity. Our position has been made known to the United States consistently."

The spokesperson further said: "From our perspective, this decision is a matter of deep and abiding concern. The leadership of the U.S. has publicly stated its commitment to counter terrorism, to dismantle terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and to bring those responsible for the Mumbai terror attacks to justice. In this context the decision of the U.S. authorities in this case is a cause of serious disappointment." (ANI)

ELLENVILLE ? Ellenville Mayor Jeff Kaplan isn't waiting around for Washington to take action in the wake of the Newtown shootings. He's called a special meeting of the Village Board to discuss legislation that would ban possession of handguns, assault and semi-automatic weapons.

Kaplan said in a press release he was fed up with the lack "of any meaningful attempt to prevent similar acts in the future."

"It's time for municipalities to take up the issue of gun control," he told the Times Herald-Record. "We've got to get a local conversation going."

The special meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Village Hall.

Storm brings heavy snow to northern New Mexico

Heavy snow is falling in northern New Mexico's mountains as a major storm moves into the state after dumping snow in Arizona.

The state Transportation Department says driving is especially tough in the Taos area on US 64 and on New Mexico 434 where plow drivers are reporting more than 8 inches of snow on the roadway.

Crews are plowing roads and spreading cinders as needed.

The National Weather Service says worst effects of the fast-moving storm are being felt from Interstate 40 north to the Colorado border. The fast-moving storm will bring high winds as well. The storm should begin leaving the state by Wednesday evening leaving Thursday dry.

Senior weather service forecaster Tim Shy says extreme cold temperatures are expected Wednesday night as the storm moves out.

Action 7 News will update this story if there are any major road closures or weather related accidents.?

Creating the perfect bathroom for your home | Home Improvement

In many ways, the bathroom can be the most important room in your house ? yet it?s probably one of the most neglected. The bathroom is usually the room where we spend time alone (however rushed!) at the start of each day, collecting our thoughts and deciding our priorities for the day ahead. Or it?s the place we come to unwind at the end of a busy day.

So it?s always a sensible idea to try and create the perfect bathroom for your home and, even more so, for yourself. How you do this will depend on you and the type of home you live in. You will instinctively know what bathroom designs you love ? and which complement the nature of your home.

So if you live in a modern purpose-built city centre apartment, it would probably not be a good idea to install a country attic bathroom with painted floorboards etc., however much you may yearn for it ? and vice-versa.

So look to your home for what?s ?acceptable? in overall design terms, but look to yourself for what you really love.
And once you have an idea of what?s possible in your bathroom space; don?t compromise. The fact is that bathrooms are easy to fit and shouldn?t be expensive to create ? whatever anyone else tells you. Don?t skimp too much on the basics like the bath and shower fittings, shower trays, taps and shower ? but do find the best quality bargains you can, and trust your own design ideas above all others.

You?ll need to think about the practicalities of what?s possible in the space you have ? and whether you want power showers, corner baths, walk-in shower units etc. But you should then be able to achieve a great deal by working creatively with complete suites that are very cheap to buy these days ? so try not to get drawn in to wasting money needlessly. People with a good eye for colour and design should be able to achieve the ideal bathroom for them and for their home with relative ease and not too expensively.
So the starting point is inspirational bathroom ideas, then your own designs and ideas, followed by good workman (or woman?) you can work with and trust.

Military vessel drydocked in Campbell River

A military training vessel that ran aground near Powell River earlier this month is here in Campbell River being inspected for damage.

The Black Duck, a 55-foot auxiliary vessel run by 19 Wing Comox?s marine section, arrived at Dec. 5 at Ocean Pacific where it is undergoing a damage assessment.

?This one was brought here as an emergency haul out because it was taking on water,? said Bruce Kempling, president of Ocean Pacific. ?It?s here for an emergency assessment.?

The onsite evaluation is an official recording of the extent of the damage the boat sustained, what can be restored, salvaged or replaced, and how long it will take to repair the vessel.

Kempling said there is no timeline as to how long the boat will be in Ocean Pacific?s ship yard.

The Black Duck got hung up on some rocks on Vivian Island near Powell River Dec. 3 during a search and rescue scuba diving exercise.

Capt. Trevor Reid, public affairs officer for 19 Wing, said the crew was conducting scoop diving exercises, which is part of the search and rescue technicians? required annual qualifications.

Six rescue technicians and three crew members were on board at the time and had to be airlifted off the vessel by a Cormorant helicopter and flown back to 19 Wing Comox.

No one on board was injured.

This is the second incident involving the Black Duck this year.

On Jan. 16 a three-member crew onboard the Black Duck was conducting training exercises when it received a call from the Coast Guard about three people in a 16-foot welded boat experiencing engine overheating.

The Black Duck attended to the distressed vessel and after determining the boaters on board to be safe, waited with them until the Coast Guard arrived.

The Black Duck is primarily used for training and works in cooperation with 442 Squadron and is always in the water when the Snowbirds are in the air. The vessel also assists the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team by transporting personnel to sites where debris such as used smoke markers has washed ashore.

Health and Fitness Talk ? Prevent Heart Disease

preventing it by following some simple suggestions and by adopting a healthy lifestyle you can help yourself considerably regardless of past family history, age or sex.

  • Do not smoke or use tobacco. Smoking is one of the primary risk factors in developing cardiovascular disease. ?All the harsh chemicals that are in a cigarette can lead to a narrowing of the arteries or atherosclerosis which will eventually lead to heart attack. Also the nicotine in cigarettes or any tobacco product causes your heart to work harder because it narrows your blood vessels and increases your heart rate and blood pressure and the carbon monoxide replaces the oxygen in your blood causing your heart to work harder to supply oxygen to your blood. ?Women who are pregnant or taking birth control pills should not smoke either as their risk of a heart attack is greater in women who do not smoke. Incredibly enough, when a person quits smoking their chances of heart disease drops by dramatically within one year.
  • You must exercise for at least 30 minutes per day. ?Daily exercise will reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and help you control your weight better. Physical exercise will allow you to control your weight and make your heart stronger and will also allow your blood vessels to open more thus allowing more blood to enter your heart and this is always a very good thing because the more blood that your heart can efficiently pump through your body the better you will be altogether. ?Daily exercise will also help you in lowering your blood pressure, lower high cholesterol and diabetes. Stress will be a thing of the past as a good workout eliminates stress which is a major factor of heart disease. Think outside the box and take up activities such as housekeeping, gardening, walking the dog or anything that includes physical activity as these will keep you more motivated and on track in your daily exercise chores.
  • Drink plenty of water. Water is the number one fuel source for your heart, so the more water you drink the more fuel your heart has to work with and the better the circulation and performance. According to a new study, people who drink five or more glasses of water per day can lower their risk of a fatal heart attack when compared to those who drank less than two glasses of water per day.? Drinking energy drinks and soft drinks is incredibly dangerous for your heart as these types of drinks actually dehydrate you because of the high amounts of sugars, caffeine and other toxic chemicals. ?Dehydration will increase plasma and blood viscosity which is a major factor of cardiovascular heart disease.

A heart attack can seriously affect your life in a very serious way and if some care and attention is paid to these simple suggestions you should be able to enjoy a better quality of life and definitely outlive those who do not take care of themselves.
