Report: High Rate of Second Pregnancies Among Nevada Teens - 8 ...

LAS VEGAS --? Nevada is among eight states with teen moms likely to have more than one child, according to a report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In hopes of lowering teen pregnancy numbers, Nevada?lawmakers are calling for more comprehensive sex education courses.

Southern Nevada Children First is a non-profit that?helps?teen moms find a temporary sanctuary to house themselves and their children.

Joelle, who does not want her last name used,?is having contractions.?When the 19-year-old learned she was pregnant, she was excited and scared.

"Going to have to be more responsible," she said.

Joelle said she never considered any other options than raising her child.?More than one out of every five teen births in Nevada is a "repeat birth" for the mom. It puts a double?burden on the new mothers.

"If you can't buy one diaper, you definitely can't buy two," said Monique Harris with Southern Nevada Children First.

Just recently, Assemblywoman Lucy Flores went public with her own personal struggles as a teen.

"I've always said that I was the only one who didn't have kids their teenage years. That's because at 16, I got an abortion," Flores said.

She's just one of many lawmakers pushing for more comprehensive sex education classes, including information on sexually transmitted diseases and birth control.

Some teens say they weren't clear on the best way to prevent pregnancy or couldn't afford birth control.

"It was just confusing and I didn't really know if there was anyplace else?I could go," said Lorena Santana who is expecting a baby.

Some advocates are pushing for better access to healthcare, birth control, and more communication between kids and parents.

"Sex education needs to look a little different," Harris said.

Lawmakers still have weeks to decide on whether to change sex education in Nevada. Advocates say it is important for parents to discuss pregnancy prevention with their children.
